Polycarbonate:
Polycarbonate is better known
by its trade name Lexan, Merlon and Polycarbafil. They are
high toughness and heat resistance, high strength and
rigidity, excellent creep resistance and good fatigue
strength. They can be easily molded, extruded and
machined. It can be nailed and riveted without cracking.
They are relatively high in cost. These plastics are
widely used in modern manufacturing as they can be easily
worked, molded and thermoformed.
Although polycarbonate has high
impact-resistance, it has low scratch-resistance. The
characteristics of polycarbonate are quite like those of
polymethyl methacrylate, but polycarbonate is stronger and
more expensive They are used to
glass for street lamps, windows and machine guards. They retain
their toughness and strength at temperature from -138 to 120°C.
They are also used in power tools, household equipment and
blow-molded bottles.
