Polyacetal:
This plastic is better known by its trade name Delrin. It is
lightweight, has good tensile strength, and has good dimensional
stability, resistance to temperature (115°
C), resistance to creep and fatigue, low friction characteristics,
resistance to most solvents and low moisture absorption. Delrin is
made from acetal homopolymer resin & when extruded into large basic
shapes (i.e.- sheets, rods & tubes) tends to be subject to porosity
problems. These porosity problems can make the product less reliable
in certain applications.
It has been developed as a material for mechanical parts including
sprinkler nozzles, handles, gears, housings etc. It i widely used
for stereo tape cartridges, toys, furniture casters and cigarette
lighter cases. Delrin's resistance to liquids and low coefficient of
friction have also made it useful as a bearing-replacement in
casters and wheels. It has excellent durability; it is much more
resistant to wear than nylon. Delrin is gaining popularity for the
manufacture of diving equipment, due to its light weight and its low
porosity to gas under pressure.
